Fire Prevention Reminders

As firefighters, we take our jobs seriously. That not only means meeting you in your time of need but also educating you on ways you can be safe and prevent the need to meet us in person. So let’s focus on some important messages you may need to be reminded of:

  • Fire Prevention and Safety – Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the United States (USFA).
    • Make sure when you are cooking, to stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the stove.
    • If a cooking fire starts, smother it with a pot lid. NEVER throw water on a grease fire.
    • If there is a fire – get out and stay out.  NEVER go back into a burning home.
    • Smoke Alarms save lives. Make sure your smoke alarms are in working order by checking monthly. Change the batteries every time change. Replace smoke alarms if they are over 10 years old or if faulty.
    • Plan and practice a fire escape plan – you can find one at nfpa.org.
  • Address Signs – address signs are available at our Station 1/Headquarters on Z Highway for $15 each.
    • Address signs are reflective and may help us to find your home faster
  • CPR – consider taking CPR classes.
    • We are currently working on providing CPR classes to our community at our Station 1/Headquarters
    • Watch for upcoming dates on our Facebook page or by calling the office
  • Check on elderly neighbors – consider checking on your elderly neighbors.
    • Make sure they have their heating and cooling needs met
    • Make sure they have access to emergency services
    • Check for rugs they can slip on or areas in the house they can trip over
  • Toddlers and Children – you can make learning fire safety with your kids fun
    • Check the sparky.org website for fun ideas
    • Practice an escape plan with children
    • Teach them to not play with hot items (space heaters, stovetops, matches, lighters and cigarettes)
